Warren County Scrimmage and Grundy County Tournament Summaries
After losing six starters to graduation last year, the THS Lady Cats Volleyball team is in a rebuilding year. With only two returning seniors, two juniors and a truck load of sophomores, we were uncertain how quickly the girls could develop the necessary teamwork skills, not so much the individual skills that would get them competitive. Well, we were very pleasantly surprised Monday, August 6, when we scrimmaged a very good Warren Co. team. Warren Co. had not lost but a few players to graduation and looked just as strong as they did last year. Of the four games we played, two were very close and our girls looked very impressive for the lack of experience as a new team with an all new offense. The junior varsity looked just as good in their two games, showing a lot of improvement over last year. Though we didn’t win any of the games that day, we did find things that needed some work. But the surprise was the things that don’t need as much work as we thought they might.
The following Saturday we traveled to Grundy Co. for a scrimmage tournament. There would be no play off for a final winner, just five matches for each of the ten teams that entered. Again, just some pre-season matches for the coaches to evaluate their team and the areas that need improvement. Once again we were pleasantly surprised by the girls teamwork. With each match being the best 2 out of 3, time permitting, and having ten varsity players present, we grouped the girls so that team A would play game 1 and team B would play game 2. Host Grundy Co. was the only match we had that went to a third game and our girls pulled out the win. We split with one other team, St. Andrews of Sewanee, but with no time left for a third game. By virtue of total points scored in the two games, THS was declared the winner. Thus we finished the day 5-0. This was, in the two coaches opinions, the best time we ever had at a tournament. And it had nothing to do with being undefeated. I don’t know if the girls shared the same view or not. Can you imagine 100+ girls with no cell phone service, no texting, no nothing? Must have been rough.
As with most teams in spring practice, you hope for the best but fear the worst. But after seeing the performance of our girls this past week, our future looks bright.
